It is crucial for paint to adhere well to the surface we are painting, because when we want to paint something, We want the paint to adhere well and not easily come off. This grip of the paint is known as paint adhesion. Shot blasting is a process we use to help paint adhere better to steel surfaces.
What is Shot Blasting?
Shot blasting is not something you would think sounds like a game or something that has to do with shooting, but it is an excellent method of surface preparation for painting a surface. In shot blasting machine, we use small metal balls or other materials that blast away any bumps, dirt, or old paint on the steel surface. That blasting roughens the steel and makes the paint adhere better. It’s as if you’re etching these tiny scratches on the surface, which provides the paint with something to grip onto.
Reusable abrasive media: ranging from shots, grit, or steel fibers
There are also many good reason to use steel shot blasting machine in preparing the steel for paint. For starters, it cleans the steel surface exceptionally well. It helps eliminate any rust, old paint, or dirt that may exist on the surface. This is important because we want to apply the new paint on a clean surface and a smooth surface. New paint will not adhere well otherwise on a dirty or old painted surface.
Second, shot blasting roughens the steel surface. Consider what surface you would prefer to paint on — smooth metal or a more porous rough surface covered in small bumps and crevices. The rougher the surface, the more places the paint has to hold on and stick. That means the paint is going to adhere much better and have less chance of simply peeling off in the future.
Furthermore, shot blasting provide protection against rust and damaged steel surfaces. Rough, clean surface for the paint to adhere on to make the paint last. This allows both the metal and the paint to be better shielded from wear and tear down the line.
Shot Blasting Provides Better Paint Coverage
One big advantage of floor shot blasting machine is that it allows the paint to cover the surface better. If paint is applied to a surface that has not been prepped properly, it can clump, flake or show unevenness. This means that the final product can appear sloppy and unprofessional.
The surface also becomes rougher, like a textured surface, and when the paint adheres to it, it will be more attached. What that means for us is, as we paint, it has more room to distribute evenly. Rough texture adds a lot of thickness to the layer of paint and thus produces smooth and complete paint coverage. This will make everything look neat and tidy.
How Shot Blasting Helps Paint Adhere
Most of the steel industries use shot blasting to help their steel surfaces to be porous and thus allow paint to stick on it better. Shot blasting cleans all dirt, rust, and old paint off of the steel so that the steel is the blank slate ready for a new coat of paint.
Shot blasting creates a rough surface, increasing the surface area of the steel. That providing many additional places for the paint to hang onto, reaching much deeper into the surface. This will allow the paint to adhere and hold up better than if applied on a smooth, unprepared surface with shot blasting.
